Advancements in science and technology over years have been a boon to mankind. With these advancements has come a reliance on I.T and abundance of gadgets and equipment that help make our lives that bit easier in one way or another. Electrical and electronic equipment is everywhere, and there is a desire to replace them regularly, to keep up with the latest requirements and before they become obsolete. There is an often unseen downside to this constant replacement of I.T, and that downside is the waste generated, and what to do with it.

Each year we accumulate tonnes and tonnes of waste electric equipment (e-waste). Until relatively recently Electronic Waste Disposal was not a real concern, we just disposed of it as we would garbage (often into landfills). Enacting the WEEE Directive of 2007 gave legal enforcement to correct procedure of WEEE Waste Collection and Electronic Waste Disposal. These legislations have paved the way for more stringent evaluation and processing of electronic waste. Further revisions to the WEEE Directive have strengthened correct e-waste disposal, as we all understand that electronic waste is a shared problem that we must tackle together. Electronic Waste Disposal has since become a prolific industry, and now firms have sprung-up to cater for the e-waste produced by; Universities, schools, hospitals, offices etc. With laws now firmly in place directing correct Electronic Waste Disposal, and WEEE Waste Collection, registered agencies are able to offer their services to businesses and individuals alike.

Many WEEE Waste Collection services have ongoing contracts with large firms, and will regularly collect scheduled WEEE waste. It is common practice for businesses that sell electronic goods to provide some form of WEEE Waste Collection for customers to dispose of old equipment. This is a very good initiative that promotes social responsibility, as in theory, if we were all to recycle an old item each time we bought a new one, then we would be going some way towards getting on top of the shared problem of E-waste.

Specific practices of WEEE Waste Collection will vary from business to business, for companies and organisations that have periodic WEEE Waste Collection, they will usually have paperwork to complete, providing details and descriptions of the items ready for collection. WEEE waste can then be inspected onsite by agency staff and separated upon collection. All processes are documented and signed by both parties. WEEE waste is then meticulously sorted, and items destined for recycling are removed. Proper Electronic Waste Disposal helps us to reuse scarce metals, and ensure that we aren’t polluting the environment.
